Green

A whole new freshman class                             I know what time and weather
of leaves has arrived                                          will do to every leaf.

on the dark twisted branches                             But the camellia swells
we call our woods, turning                                 to ivory at the window,

green now--color of                                          and the bleeding heart bleeds
anticipation. In my 76th year,                             only beauty.
                                                                                                Linda Pastan, "April"

Spring is at its zenith right now in the woods where I live.  Most of the trees have leafed out and in every direction that amazing green color that only spring produces, radiates and pulses.  Looking out across the ridge to the water, the early morning light splashing down through the trees, my heart lifts.  There are loons this year, and their soulful call in the gathering yellow green dusk only intensifies how beautiful it all is.

In the west we have associated the heart with the color of red, for blood and passion. Yet in older cultures in the East,  green--the signal of new life--was assigned to the mysterious pump of our lives and to the energy and emotions it produced. They understood that while the heart expressed the passion and heat of the body that brought new life, when it instinctively responded to the beautiful and mysterious it also created another, just as essential, inner life.

The Real World is so beautiful.  That beauty, that gorgeous expression of life, is perhaps its most important gift to us. When we let ourselves notice how good if feels to look into all that green, we are receiving a blessing of our heart's potential to create that other inner life.  I guess you could say we are letting our hearts not just pump, but also leaf out.
