The Same, in any Language

There are two journeys we take when we travel. One is the physical experience of our senses-what we see and taste and do. The other is more subtle and discreet one which involves what we experience in the world of emotions and feelings. At best, traveling broadens our inner experiences. It has the power to open us up to new ways of seeing and being. It fosters tolerance for difference and acceptance of new ideas. It has the enormous potential to allow us to see how alike we are despite the many ways in which we are different.

Take smiles for instance. A smile is the same in every language. Some cultures are more reserved in their display of them, but the world over they are a sign of welcome and acceptance. India is full of smiles. Day after day, over and over, I encountered open generous countenances and quick and ready smiles. Some offered, some given in quick response to my own. Standing in strange lands, it is the signal that what might appear to be tense or scary, really isn't. It's simply that we haven't yet understood what we are seeing. A smile is the invitation to help you learn to do so.
